Overview
Robert Law has a broad based background that has established him as one of the outstanding governmental experts in Michigan. His unique blend of private sector and governmental experience is unparalleled in Michigan. He is especially well qualified in working with clients that have not only been successful but have also added great value to the citizens of the State of Michigan. His work in stimulating economic development and job creation is well established, notably his efforts in creating a “High Tech” economy base before it was fashionable to do so. He is a pioneer in the development of public sector economic development tools in the State of Michigan.
He attended the University of Detroit, majoring in Economics and Finance, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also graduated with honors from Wayne State University Law School.
Mr. Law started his career as an attorney in private practice serving as a Public Administrator for the State of Michigan and as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Mr. Law started and served as a managing partner of his law firm that grew into one of the premier corporate, technology and government law firms in Western Wayne and Oakland County’s.
He has had an accomplished career in state and federal government and politics. In his mid-twenties, Mr. Law ran for the Michigan Legislature, demonstrating maturity beyond his years. In his first year, his peers voted him as the outstanding freshman legislator. As a freshman, he was appointed a member of the Appropriations Committee and served on the Transportation and General Government Subcommittees. In his first term he had 8 bills passed into law more than all other freshman Republicans combined.
Mr. Law had to good fortune during his terms in the legislature to work closely with State Representative John Engler and Dick Posthumous who is currently in charge of the Governors legislative program. He also worked closely with then staff member John Walsh who is currently the Governors Chief Policy advisor.
After being elected twice as a State Representative, Mr. Law left the legislature to take the position of Executive Assistant for Policy and Legislation to the Governor serving for almost four years. In this position he was in charge of all policy development including the very advanced technology program that drove the development of the Oakland Technology Park near Oakland University. He was also in charge of the all lobby activities for the Governor’s in the State of Michigan.
In this position, Mr. Law played a primary role in passing legislation to reform Workers Compensation and Unemployment Compensation statues. Mr. Law worked tirelessly to enact laws that would be the basis for Michigan’s economic development and development technology.
While working for the Governor, Mr. Law was instrumental in developing and passing ground breaking legislation that created the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF). The MSF continues to this day to be the primary funding source for majority of economic development projects through the MEDC. He worked closely with Dan Pero who as Governor Engler’s Chief-of-Staff helped to create the MEDC building on the foundation of the MSF.
These reforms and innovative economic development approach were responsible for greatly improving the business climate in Michigan for decades. Mr. Law also helped develop major programs to spur the development of technology and new jobs. He was the architect of legislation that is at the core of Michigan’s current life sciences and technology programs.
Mr. Law has also become an outstanding advocate for many Michigan based private companies and public institutions in Washington D.C. His expertise in working on federal policy and financial issues has been a great benefit to many clients.
Mr. Law lives in Western-Oakland County. He comes from a long line of elected officials. His brother Tom served as Oakland County Commissioner for 20 years and including serving as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. His sister-in-law Sharron Law served as Clerk of West Bloomfield Twp. for almost twenty years. Dave Law served as a State Representative in western-Oakland County for six years and now serves as District Court judge. In addition, Mr. Law’s brother Gerry Law (who is a senior consultant emeritus with SCS) served more than 20 years as a State Representative.
Mr. Law has also served as Chair of the 11th District Republican Committee and on the Oakland Republican Executive Committee and we well as being elected twice as a Republican National Convention Delegate. He has held many other political positions over his career.
